Hammond Davis Birks werd de bevelhebbend officier van de 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division in 1942. Eind 1944, werd Colonel Birks aangesteld als Assistant Division Commander 9th Infantry Division onder bevel van Major General Louis Craig. In 1945 werd hij gepormoveerd tot Brigadier General. In 1946 ging hij met pensioen uit het leger.

Hammond birks overleed op 30 januari 1973 en ligt begraven op de Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County
California, Verenigde Staten, Sectiie B, Graf 241-A.
