"For distinguished conduct and devotion to duty during Operations on Stampalia and Mikonos. During the initial stages of the attack on the German W/T Station on Mikonos on 24 April 1944, Corporal Conby was badly burned on the face and hands by a No. 77 grenade. He nevertheless continued to engage the enemy and on several occasions crept up to the house to throw grenades into the upper rooms. Whilst thus engaged, he was again wounded, this time in the thigh by a German grenade. Refusing assistance, he continued with the attack, encouraging the men around him and directing their fire. Only when the post had finally surrendered did he allow his wounds to be attended to.
Previously, during the attack on the German position at Castello on Stampalia on the night of 27 March 1944, this NCO conducted himself with coolness and efficiency. The success of both these operations is due largely to the determination and example shown by this NCO."
