Hoewel hij normaal gesproken piloot van een vliegboot is en pas sinds het begin van de oorlog met Italië naar de afdeling jachtvliegers is overgeplaatst, heeft Flight Lieutenant Burges drie vijandelijke toestellen neergeschoten en drie zo zwaar beschadigd dat ze waarschijnlijk hun basis niet hebben bereikt. Hij heeft grote vasthoudendheid en vastberadenheid getoond bij het aangaan van het gevecht, gewoonlijk tegenover een getalsmatig sterkere vijand.
