The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Donald E. Zweifel (ASN: 37475251), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 16 September 1944. On that date, during an attack against Fort Jeanne D'Arc approaches near Gravelotte, France, assaulting infantry elements were pinned down by intense enemy fire. Sergeant Zweifel, with complete disregard for his own safety voluntarily advanced alone against a German machine-gun position and with hand grenades killed two of the three defenders and wounded the other. Spotting a second machine-gun he continued forward through heavy fire, boldly assaulted the gun and killed the four Germans at the position. His heroic action permitted the infantry to advance, and although wounded, the Sergeant remained with his company until the attack was successfully completed. Staff Sergeant Sweifel's conspicuous bravery and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
