"DURING WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) MORE THAN 1000 SHIPS FROM NORWAY'S MERCHANT NAVY AND THE ROYAL NORWEGIAN NAVY SAW ACTIVE SERVICE. THEY CARRIED OUT INNUMERABLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENTS AND TRANSPORTED 145 MILLION TONS OF CARGO OF INESTIMABLE VALUE TO THE ALLIED VICTORY. THE MERCHANT FLEET WAS ARMED. MORE THAN HALF OF THE SHIPS WERE LOST. DANGER AND HARD WORK LEFT THEIR MARKS ON THE MAJORITY OF THE 25,000 SEAMEN. 4500 GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE FIGHT FOR THE LIBERATION OF NORWAY. THE GREAT COURAGE AND LOYALTY OF OUR NOBLE SEAMEN WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT AND DEEPEST GRATITUDE"
