Oorlogsmonument Krijgsgevangenen Kanchanaburi

The POW memorial is the first of its kind. It was inspired by the IJA staff and built by the POWs using cement and materials leftover from the Bridge.

The obverse of the cenotaph explains the purpose of the shrine; in Chinese characters.

In addition to the central cenotaph there are 4 corner structures that contain inscriptions in different languages of the POWs and Asian romusha. One of those is in the Sumatran dialect but is dedicated to the Javanese romusha. There were also thousands of KNIL POWs (of European decent). But there is no Dutch inscription. It is thought that the corner that today contains an English icon and a Blank space once held English and Dutch inscriptions but that that corner was destroyed during one of the raids on the bridges (only a few meters away). Those who rebuilt that corner had no knowledge of what the original contained.
