Stolpersteine Grote Markt

Deze kleine messing plaquette (Stolpersteine of struikelstenen), die is gelegd op 12-5-2024 gelegd, herdenkt:
* Gustaaf Wauters
Vanaf midden juni 1943 tot zijn arrestatie is Gustaaf Wauters (°Turnhout 9 januari 1904) provinciaal hoofd van de B.N.B., papierhandelaar en hoofdbibliothecaris verantwoordelijk voor het onsnappingsnetwerk. Gustaaf Wauters wordt door verraad van zijn schoonzuster Stella Peeraer opgepakt op 6 februari 1944. Hij verblijft in de gevangenissen van Antwerpen en Sint-Gilles. Gustaaf wordt gefusilleerd op 31 januari 1945 in Sonnenburg in Duitsland, vandaag Polen.

Deze Stolperstein ligt hier voor een verzetsstrijder, vervolgd, gedeporteerd en/of vermoord in de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of the last voluntary residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
